World record in Sofia!

Sirmais Zigismunds from Latvia broke the World Junior Record in Javelin Throw. During European Cup Winter Throwing in Sofia he threw 84.47 in his first attempt. The previous record of 83.87 was made by Andreas Torkildsen (Norway) in 2001.

Sofia'2011 Medals

The medals of the European Cup Winter Throwing Sofia 2011 was officially introduced to the Bulgarian public during the first official press-conference on 15 March 2011 organised by LOC


Sofia'2011 Referees

The Referees who are going to officiate the European Cup Winter Throwing received their official uniforms exactly one month prior to the event. The premiere of the new uniforms took place during the National Indoor Championships 19-20 February 2011 in Sofia. The selection of volunteers is also made already. Famous former champions enrolled in the team of volunteers, such as Svetla Dimitrova, European Champion in 100m Hurdles twice, Liliyana Tomova, European Champion in 800 m and Iva Prandzheva, World Junior Champion in Long Jump. The Referees’ outfit for the ECWT will be red, blue for organisers, and black for volunteers. All uniforms were provided by Japanese sports equipment company ASICS, sponsoring the European Cup Winter throwing 2011.

Leo Winner – the mascot

The mascot of the European Cup Winter Throwing Sofia 2011 was officially introduced to the Bulgarian public during a Junior Indoor Meeting in Sofia on 21 December 2010. The meeting was for boys and girls and youth athletes and included 6 events – 60m, 200m, 1000m, high jump, long jump and shot put. Over 400 kids from all over Bulgaria took part in the meeting, cheered by the new mascot – a handsome lion who never got tired of posing for a photo with everyone who asked.

The President of Bulgarian Athletic Federation Dobromir Karamarinov invited all young athletes to attend the European Cup Winter Throwing in March 2011 and underlined that several Olympic, World and European Champions will come to Sofia which offers a great opportunity for the youngsters to meet their idols in person.

A contest fort he name of the mascot was held along with the athletics competition. Many kids gave their proposals. In the beginning of January 2011 Bulgarian Athletic Federation will officially announce the chosen name - LEO WINNER.


European Athletics Site visit

European Athletics representatives visited Sofia in the first week of December 2010 in order to survey the preparations for the forthcoming European Cup Winter Throwing. On 3 December 2010 the Council Delegate Mr. Janez Aljancic (SLO), and the Technical Delegate Mr. Ivica Matijevic (SRB) were received by the Mayor of Sofia Mrs. Yordanka Fandakova, who welcomed them in the City Hall. The delegates also had meetings with representatives of the Ministry of Physical Education and Sport and with the Rector of the National Sports Academy Prof. Lachezar Dimitrov. Main subject of the discussions was the organisation of the forthcoming 11th edition of this unique competition and the role of the different institutions for its successful realization.

After the official receptions, the delegates visited the National Sports Academy and inspected the main stadium where the Shot Put, Javelin Throw and part of the Discus Throw will take place as well as the Opening ceremony and the individual award ceremonies. They also inspected the newly reconstructed Throwing field for Hammer and Discus, the warm-up areas, weight lifting rooms and other facilities required for the competition.

The site visit also included a tour of the hotels provided to accommodate over 500 athletes, officials, guests and journalists.

On 4th December the delegates had a working session with the LOC where many details were discussed.


New Throwing Field

The existing throwing field of the National Sports Academy was entirely reconstructed in September – November 2010 in order to fulfill the high standards for staging European Athletics events. This will be the main area for the hammer throw during the 11th European Cup Winter Throwing, Sofia 2011.

The facilities of the National Sports Academy are well known for the number of hammer throw competitions in Bulgaria staged there. All the National Championships in the last years, as well as the hammer throw finals of the Balkan Championships 2007 took place in the field of NSA. During the World Military Athletics Championships 2009, this field was the arena of many competitions and lot of participants exceeded the master’s line of 77 m. there.

In the beginning of 2011 the upgraded Throwing Field is expected to be certified by IAAF and the first official competition will take place there on 8-9 March during the National Winter Throwing Championships.


First test

Bulgarian National Winter Throwing Championships will take place on 8-9 March 2011 and will be the test event of the forthcoming European Cup and will include the same events as the ones to be held in Sofia on 19-20 March 2011. The programme will also include events for Junior and Youth along with the Senior athletes. The selection of Bulgarian National team for the European Cup Winter Throwing will be made during this competition.

It will be also the first in-competition testing of the recently upgraded Throwing Field and the new facilities secured for the European event – throwing cage, implements etc. Bulgarian athletic federation is expecting more than 200 throwers from 60-70 clubs to take part in the National Championships.


The best Bulgarian throwers are getting ready for the European Cup Winter Throwing

The best Bulgarian throwers are preparing for the forthcoming European Cup Winter Throwing. Most decorated among them is Georgi Ivanov –Youth & Junior World Champion in Shot Put. Ivanov is the world’s best Youth athlete in 2001 and world’s best Junior in 2004. He also has a bronze medal from the European Junior Championships in 2003 and a couple of fourth places on European U23 Championships in 2005 and 2007.

The best Bulgarian Discus Thrower in last years is Rosen Karamfilov. He is a student in the National Sports Academy and practices every day on the fields where the European Cup Winter Throwing will take place. Karamfilov is medalist from the World Youth Championship 2005 and finalist from the World Junior Championships 2008. In these years he was competing in Shot Put, but nowadays he’s focused on the Discus.

Bulgarian record holder in Javelin Throw Kolyo Neshev is also training hard for the European event in Sofia in March. His national record of 82.55 was made on the National Stadium “Vasil Levski” in 2007. Now his aim is to improve this performance to his own spectators in the company of some of the best Javelin throwers of Europe.

Among the young Bulgarian hopes are Zdravko Dimitrov (Hammer Throw) and Ben Gettemans (Shot Put and Discus Throw). Dimitrov was Balkan Junior Champion in Hammer Throw for 2009, while Gettemans was twice Balkan Champion in Shot Put and Discus Throw in 2008. Now both of them will struggle for a place among the top U23 athletes.

Bulgarian female team is expected to be composed of young athletes among which Radoslava Mavrodieva (Shot Put).
