The European Cup Winter Throwing meeting has historically provided an early season opportunity for the continent's top throwers.

The 11th edition of the event in Sofia is sure to provide once again the platform for Europe’s best to compete against each other.

Bulgaria have been the organisers of high-level European athletics events in the past and I have every confidence that this year’s edition of the European Cup Winter Throwing will be an excellent competition.

I would like to thank the Bulgarian Athletics Federation, the local organizing committee and the Bulgarian Ministry of Education and Sport for their efforts in hosting this European Athletics event.

I am looking forward to the Bulgarian capital welcoming European, world and Olympic competitors in shot put, discus, hammer and javelin from all over the continent in March, when they will do battle using the excellent facilities of the National Sports Academy.

It is my pleasure to congratulate you on the occasion of the European Cup Winter Throwing, which was entrusted with the Bulgarian Athletic Federation and the National Sports Academy "Vasil Levski" in March 2011!

I am really glad that we will have a wonderful opportunity to be organisers and immediate witnesses of the broader meeting of the European elite in the throws. There is no doubt that being a host is another great recognition for the success of our national athletics at international level during last years and the professional efforts of Bulgarian specialists to raise the bar higher and higher.

I believe that the battles of the best throwers of the Old Continent to be witnessed in our country will engage the interest of many sports fans. This is how we can attract new admirers of the “Queen”. And this is the most important step - more children to be keen on sport, which becomes a vital part of their lives!

The capital of Bulgaria was chosen to host the 11th edition of this prestigious competition, which is an honour for the organisers and for our city which offers excellent conditions for staging such an event.

Sofia Municipality is an institution that helps promoting sports events which contribute to the development of sports activities. Our capital is going to be the stage where European, World and Olympic champions and medalists will come to compete in four Olympic athletics events.

The choice of Bulgaria and the National Sports Academy “Vassil Levski” for a host venue of the 11th European Cup Winter throwing is a remarkable event for us.

The National Sports Academy exists already seventy years and the discipline of Athletics has been playing fundamental role in the education process. Major part of the sport achievements of Bulgarian athletes during these 70 years are closely linked with the Academy.

In Bulgaria the Academy is renowned centre for the athletics development and training. By organising the 11th European Cup Winter Throwing we are becoming a centre on European level.

We are convinced that the event will be accomplished at a highest standard in terms of technical performance; moreover the best athletes in throwing are Europeans. At the same time we truly believe that the competition will be a successful starting point for young athletes.

We all are proud of the fact that Bulgaria is hosting a unique competition – the European Cup Winter Throwing. The best athletes in shot put, discus, hammer and javelin throw will challenge each other in the capital city of our country – Sofia. It is also an opportunity for the athletic fans to meet with the top athletes in the throws as we expect to welcome Olympic, World and European champions in Sofia.

In the last few years Bulgarian Athletic Federation successfully hosted several high level European events. Now we wish to organize the best ever European Cup Winter Throwing. We believe it is an achievable goal as we dispose with the perfect sport and technical facilities of the National Sports Academy, the competition venue is located close to the hotels and the airport, and we have the professional skills and dedication of all those who are working hard for the success of the organisation.
